My 3 favorite shopping cart options you can use to sell your digital products online and how to choose which is right for you

shopping-cart-options-post-image-2

You want to sell a digital product, but signing up for some expensive all-in-one marketing software (like Infusionsoft or Ontraport) is just out of the question right now.

I totally get it (and to be honest – even though I use Infusionsoft, I’m always searching for a more affordable option that does practically the same thing).

I’m obsessed with testing out new software, so I figured as I search for better alternatives, I’d share my favorite non-Infusionsoft shopping cart options with you.

Instead of showing you 15 different options and sending you on a wild goose chase to figure out what each one does, I’ve rounded up my top 3 choices that I guarantee will work for you, depending on what you are selling and who you need the shopping cart to integrate with.

All of these options include a set monthly fee, rather than a cost per transaction fee.

I prefer set monthly fees versus cost per transaction fees, because then you don’t have to worry about your fee jumping when you have your big launches and you aren’t being punished for creating awesome content.

I’ve included links to each option below. Please note that these links are affiliate links, but know that I only recommend products that I’ve personally tested and approved.

Alright, let’s get into it, shall we? We’ve got new products to launch!

Overall thoughts:

So far, I’ve only test drove this one, but I know a few people who use it and rave about it every chance they get. The interface isn’t my favorite (it reminds me of an advanced e-junkie), but it gets the job done and is the most affordable option.

Overall thoughts:

I’ve personally used this one in the past, before I moved over to Infusionsoft, and it’s my personal favorite based on the features and price. They seamlessly integrate with all of the popular mailing list and payment software options out there so connecting everything is a breeze.

3. SamCart

sam cart

Definitely the priciest option, but this is the closest you’ll get to Infusionsoft or Ontraport without having the email marketing built-in.

Main features:

  • Allows you to sell a variety of digital products
  • Affiliate program for your products
  • Customizable with your logo and colors
  • Allows discount codes
  • Awesome checkout page layouts and templates
  • Integrates with Paypal and other payment software

  • Upsell options
  • Tons of other integrations available with membership plugins like Wishlist and OptimizePress (neither of the other options seamlessly integrates with membership plugins, so if you are creating an online course using one of these tools, this could be the deciding factor for you).
  • Split testing capabilities
  • 14 day free trial available

Cost: $99/month (only 1 payment level right now, but they say they are going to add more in the future)

Mailing List integrations include:

Overall thoughts:

Though it’s definitely the priciest option, it’s definitely the most professional looking. Hopefully they will roll out their other payment tiers soon, because I personally think $99 is pretty expensive for a shopping cart.

How to choose a shopping cart for your business

Now that you have your options, it’s time to choose which is the better fit for your business. Here’s how I go about choosing my all-time favorite.

Step 1: Write down your must-have features

I start by writing down a list of everything I must-have in a shopping cart software.

For example, my list would include:

  • Integrates with ________ ( < insert mailing list here)
  • Affiliate program for my products
  • Allows discount codes
  • Automatic delivery of file
  • Allows Paypal and Authorize.net payments
  • Set monthly fee
  • Branding customization (uploading my logo, changing colors, etc)

Step 2: Write down your would-be-nice features

Next, I write down my would-be-nice features, which typically end up being my tie breakers, since many of the shopping cart options all have my must-have features.

My would-be-nice list includes:

  • On-site checkout available (which means that an overlay would popup on my site to checkout, rather than sending them to a new page)
  • Upsell options (which means that it would show a related product either pre-checkout or post-checkout to the purchaser)

Step 3: Compare the pricing

If the first two steps lead you to two great options that do what you need them to do, AND have your would-be-nice features, then the ultimate tie breaker would be price.

  • I LOVE DPD! I was just using the ecommerce option within Squarespace before but I love all of the different features that comes with DPD!

    • Amanda Genther

Yes, that’s a great one. I’ve been in there playing around and love it. The price is also amazing, so that’s a huge plus!

  • I love DPD too! I was using it for my course and switched over to sell from within the membership platform I’m using (Fedora), but I miss how seamless DPD was! Considering switching back to selling through that again. I have a client that uses SamCart too and it seems really nice!

    • Amanda Genther

it is to seamless. I’m on Infusionsoft now and I’m always contemplating switching back to a more affordable option since there are so many out there now that work so well together!

  • Emily

This is a great resource – thanks for sharing! I’ve been distracted by bells and whistles in the past but definitely now look for sweet and simple. And simply effective.

    • Amanda Genther

Yes – that’s always a great way to go. I use Infusionsoft now and find that I don’t use nearly as many of the bells and whistles they have – nor do I really want to. Sweet and simple is the future :) Thanks for commenting!

  • I’ve been looking for some resources, thanks for sharing!

    • Amanda Genther

No problem. Glad it was helpful!

  • Amanda Genther

Gumroad is definitely a great option, except I’m not a fan of the per transaction fees. This post is a lineup of my fave shopping carts that are a flat monthly fee. I was also trying to find some that people could set up on their own, instead of always needing to hire a developer. I think there are a ton of great options out there, but these are my favorite for the things I mentioned above :)
